[REC] - Lisa's Review

It's getting good climbing the Time Out 100 best horrors list... for one thing the movies keep getting better.  It's definately been more positive than negative of late and the same is the case for this weeks movie - [REC].

Weird title I hear you say, and yes, it is.  I'm sure it's something we all recognise as the abbreviation for 'Record'.  The title also has the little red circle which also denotes 'recording'.  As the movie is a 'found footage' movie taken on a video camera by a Spanish TV crew, the title makes sense.  The found footage in question is from the Spanish reality TV show 'While you were sleeping', which tasks itself with following people who make their living while the rest of the world are sleeping.  This movie is taken as the crew follow a Barcelona fire crew; pretty young presenter Ángela (Manuela Velasco) and camera man Pablo (Pablo Rosso).

As they spend time in the station, they are finding it difficult filling camera time as so little is happening, but you know what they say about wishing for something.... sometimes it comes true.

The station get a call from an apartment building where an elderly woman has become trapped in her apartment, except when they arrive, it seems a little more is amiss than an old dear becoming trapped.

Ángela and Pablo enter the building and climb to the old ladies floor, upon trying to reach her, she suddenly becomes very aggressive and even bites a policeman who was also at the scene to help gain entry.  He is pretty badly injured and everything is thrown into disarray.  In all the confusion, everyone within the building finds themselves trapped inside the apartment building as the military and police seal it off.

[REC] documents the occurances within the building that night as Ángela and Pablo get to the bottom of what is really going on.

To say anything further about the movie would be removing some of the enjoyment for anyone who hadn't watched it yet.  When I first saw it, I didn't even know any of the above.  I knew it was a Spanish horror movie that had been making waves.  That was enough.  A love of horror and an adoration for the Spanish language means I'm always going to love this movie, but seriously, it's well worth a watch.  It is right up there amongst my favourite horrors and stands proudly on my shelves.

A BIG Recommended!
