Maniac - Will's Review

So a slasher this week - Yay! I do love me a slasher!

A very atypical one though; Maniac avoids the conventions of following a group of potential victims (a la FT13th, Elm Street) or even one stand out victim (a la Halloween), instead we follow the killer; but even for that, this isn't a "hero killer" movie, not do we understand his motives (beyond "he's crazy") for quite a while.

On the subject of his crazy, the insanity is brilliantly written and acted - this is no hammed up 'conversations with himself' insanity; this is real non-linear crazy.

As he nails each of his latest victims' scalp to a mannequin (which is his MO) he does have a habit if conversing with himself, but he switches sides of the conversation rapidly; there is no 'call and return' preformed by two distinct personalities, just a jumble of thoughts that bleed into one another. At times these little monologues genuinely unnerving, not because if any particular content, but because you could easily believe them as the ramblings of a madman.

I also found the level of remorse interesting; at times he would seem genuinely sorry for his killings, even while performing them.

It's a shame then, that the story is so straight forward, and the killings so bland; well executed (by FX maestro Tom Savinni) but dull. The only real stand-out death being when Savinni himself (appearing simply because he already cad a cast of his own head) is shot in the head, causing his head to explode in a spectacularly over the top fashion.

There are some nice quasi-supernatural parts near the end, but they aren't enough to rescue the movie.

Despite a great performance from the lead, I found the whole affaire to be a little slow; I can see why this one has been re-made.

I enjoyed it well enough, but can't recommend it due to the pace.

Maniac - Lisas Review

***SPOILERS***

Back with a familiar feel this week.  This weeks movie felt like we were back on our Beyond Nasty challenge again.  Is that a bad or good thing I hear you ask?  Well, neither kinda..... this is one of those films that pass an hour and a half and you don't think its bad enough to slate, but at the same time you're left feeling kinda 'meh' about it.  I don't want to be too unkind about this movie as it actually wasn't too bad, but I can't help but feel Joe Spinnell is more deserving of better material... unfortunate that he actually wrote 'Maniac'.

So our premis here is a middle aged, chunky, single man (Frank) living in New York.  Its shown pretty much from the getgo that he's a bit of a freak.  We are shown that he murders young women, scalps them and then places the scalp on a mannequins in his appartment.  He has several mannequins, obviously hinting that he is a seasoned serial killer.  After several nights of sleeping with his new scalp adorned mannequins.  He goes out to find a new victim.

We are also made aware that he has a bit of a mother complex.  His mum was a nasty piece of work who died in a car accident.  Frank isn't quite ready to accept mummy dearest has gone so he seems to think each of the mannequins IS his mother, having full, allbeit one-sided conversations with her.

We only deviate from his normal routine when a young photographer (Anna) takes his photo in the park.  He finds out where she lives and goes to her appartment.  Recognising him as the man she photographed, she lets them in... The women in these movies really do need a few safety & security lessons it seems.  Although he plans to murder her, he is impressed by her talent and ends up taking her out for dinner.

When visiting her at one of her photo shoots, he is rather taken by a young model she is photographing.  He steals a necklace belonging to her, so he can return it later, giving him an excuse to go to her house. This young lady needs to attend the same safety classes as Anna, as she opens the door to this complete stranger.  He of course gains access to her appartment, kidnaps her and takes her home.  She meets the same fate as all the other ladies, proving meeting Anna has not changed Frank at all.

The movie takes a bit of a quite spiral downwards after this point.  We see Frank and Anna going to the graveyard to visit Franks mothers grave.  He tries to kill Anna and ends up hallucinating, seeing his dead mother.

We go back to the appartment and he dreams of all his mannequins coming to life as the women that he murdered and piling on top of him before ripping his head off.  I was a bit unsure as to whether this was happening, but given he is seen laying on the bed bleeding from what seems to be a suicide attempt in the next scene, I am guessing he was dreaming or hallucinating.

In the final scene, 2 policemen enter his appartment, see his collection of mannequins and him laying on the bed bleeding.  Why they imagine him to be dead without checking, who knows.... they leave and Franks eyes snap open.  End Movie.

So what did I think?  Good points - One thing I would give mention to was certain special effects....  Tom Savini makes a short appearance, making out with a young woman in a car.  Frank blows his head off at close range with a shotgun.  Quite impressive effects there.  Also good blood throughout.  A close-up of the first scalping is also believable.

It wasn't a BAD movie, but it certainly wasn't a good one.  I thought Joe Spinnell was excellent as Frank, but the movie in itself was just something we've seen 100 times before.  Its not something I would recommend someone rush out and see, but I would probably suggest they check out the head explosion scene.

Run! Bitch Run! - Will's review

Before watching this weeks movie, I wasn't sure from the trailer if it were an parody of the rape revenge / exploitation movies of the 70's and 80's, or an homage to them.

In truth, it's a love letter to them.

Aside from the fact it was clearly shot on video or DV (rather than film) there is nothing here to tell us that Run! Bitch Run! Is not a genuine 70s exploitation movie; Happily though, the makers spared us the "distressed film" and "dust and scratches" filters, that everyone making an exploitation movie post-Grindhouse seems to think are mandatory.

And yet, for all that, it has a certain... I want to say 'attitude' to it that borders on, but isn't quite irony. I can't say for certain whether this attitude is built into the movie (possible; it does have a Tarantino-lite feel to it) or whether it existed entirely in my head, knowing that this film is just a few years old.

But whether this something that the film has is real or imagined, it certainly results in a fun viewing experience.

Sexual Assault played for titilation is one of the few (staged) things a movie can do to piss me off on taste grounds; but here, when the first assault (a girl-on-girl one) is played this way, I found myself thinking "yeah, exploitation movies were like that, weren't they‽" rather than "sick fuckers - rape is not sexy".

On the subject of sexy - I personally do not understood why some people watch 'real' films in order to see some skin (thats what the internet is for) but if you are the kind of person who watches narrative movies to look at boobies, you won't be disappointed by the first half of this film, during which boobies of all shapes, sizes and colours are flaunted for your viewing pleasure.

Story wise... Well; it's a rape revenge film. 2 girls on a road trip (selling bibles, no less) fall into the hands of a gang of nogoodnicks, and are raped and tortured, I e us killed the other left for dead and... Hell; you know the rest.

As is always the case with these things, it's all in the execution, and I'm happy to say that this one is executed perfectly.

Run, Bitch, Run - Lisa's Review

*** SPOILERS ***

So quite a recent one for review this week.  Having seen the trailer for this one a while back, I thought it looked quite interesting.  Reading the premis, you may think... interesting?? Are you sick in the head?... well possibly, but that aside, something which needs to be said about this movie is that although it is about a horrid subject matter, it doesn't seem to take itself too seriously in its style.  This movie reminded me an awful lot of a Tarantino movie in its style and direction.

So the basic premis here is following 2 catholic schoolgirls as they go door-to-door trying to sell bibles to make money for their school.  It becomes very clear right from the start that the movie is aimed primarily at a male audience, as the girls are pretty much every inch the 'fantasy' image of a school girl, complete with short kilted skirt, long socks and a full face of make-up.. having attended a catholic school, I can assure you, this is obviously not a reality.  From this itself, I didn't take the movie seriously from the get-go and I think that's what allowed me to enjoy it for what it was.  I'm a Tarantino fan and this reminded me of him all the way through.

Back to the premis.. one of our schoolgirls, Rebecca is a little rebellious, a little naughty.. just so much to allow you a good ogle at her walking around naked and enough to also point out that our other girl (Catherine) is the stereotypical 'good girl', telling her friend off for her brazenness and making her cover up.  Soooo a good little catholic girl, a virgin obviously... I wonder who our 'Bitch' of the movie will be?

Having knocked on the wrong door, as mentioned earlier, the girls fall into a horrid world with a pimp and bad guy Lobo (who just happens to be gorgeous... some eye candy for me at least), his stuttering sidekick Clint and what can only be described as his 'bitch' Marla.  Marla happens to have an eye for the ladies too, so we are treated to some girl on girl scenes (did I mention this one seemed to be aimed at a male audience?).  Rebecca is forced to engage in sexual activity with her as Catherine looks on in sheer horror.  It is here Rebecca meets her end by way of a bullet to the head (accidentally it seems).

From here poor Catherine suffers further torture and rape by Lobo, who takes her virginity and leaves her for Clint to take a turn.  Clint however seems to take a fit of conscience as he spies Catherines rosary beads lying in the dirt and is unable to continue with his abuse.  This seems to be a staple in rape/revenge movies, we always have the guy who is fundamentally good really, but is under a bad influence.

Catherine is left for dead by Clint when she falls down a hill and bangs her head.  Of course, she comes around and makes her way to a hospital.  A mention has to go to the fact she is completely nude as Clint has taken her clothes, but there seems to be an awful lot of time spent on her naked journey to find help. When she comes around, she acquires a nurses uniform (which oddly fits her like a glove) and the rest of the movie follows her as she makes her way back to the town she met Lobo, Clint and Marla to seek her revenge.

I won't give you a blow by blow account of it, but this good girl has grown some serious balls and goes to work!  A special mention has to go to the machete rape of Lobo.  Ouch!  That's got to sting!!

As previously said, I didn't get too close to this movie.. not close enough to be disturbed by the scenes I was witnessing.  I'm not sure why, but I attribute it to the style of the movie and how it was portrayed.  The ending however was quite poignant to me and maybe a reminder of what we'd just watched and maybe how hardened we have become to not have viewed the movie on any kind of emotional level.  Maybe that was just me?  I'll be interested to hear Wills take.

I did enjoy this movie.  It was entertaining and didn't require any level of  concentration.  Its 'exactly what it says on the tin'.  Thumbs up and recommended by me.

The Last House on Dead End Street - Will's Review

This is going to be short.

I was even considering just putting the word "shit" in massive letters, and leaving it at that but if anyone actually reads these things, they deserve better...

Guy gets out of jail, decides he wants to make exciting new movies, teams up with a washed out porn-director and a bunch of weirdos and makes snuff films. That's it. That's the whole movie.

It's incredibly non-linear (apparently cut down and shuffled from its original edit) and very badly dubbed - seriously, the worst dubbing I've ever seen (inexplicably, given that it was already in English).

The gore that we do see is unconvincing but most of it (and this is a movie about making snuff films, remember) happens off screen.

It tries its best to build an atmosphere, and with a better... Everything else, may have succeeded.

I will say this for it though; it's probably the only time you'll see a man being forced to fellatiate a deer's foot as it hangs from the fly of a topless woman's jeans.

I think I've made this sound more interesting that it is...

The Last House on Dead End Street - Lisa's Review

*** SPOILERS ***

So having just watched this weeks movie the question is... how the hell am I going to review this one?  I could write the review in 2 words if you like?

Monumentally Crap!!

Not good enough?  Meh, I expected as much.  Ok, lets start with a basic premis..We have a guy get out of prison and rather than stick to making porn movies, which is what he is used to, he decides to make snuff movies.  He wants "something real, thats never been done before, something with action".  Thats pretty much it I'm afraid.  Yup, I kid you not!

He teams up with a band of rather tasteless individuals (both male and female) and they proceed to kidnap, torture and kill 4 individuals.  Why these people pander to his every whim is anyones guess.  They are indeed very weird folk and indulge in some odd pastimes, but its a bit of a step to go from orgies and S&M to actual torture and murder.

The only remotely creepy thing about this movie is the masks worn during the torture/kill scenes.  I never have liked those semi-transparent masks with features drawn on, which is what we see here.  There is also a rather odd 'statue-like' head.  I didn't really get the validity of that.

The gorey bits are are slow and dull as the rest of the movie.  It all drags and makes you want to press the fast forward button.  It seemed to me something that teenage boys (and I mean really young teenage boys) may enjoy if they discovered it on the TV and weren't supposed to be watching it.  It has quite a bit of female nudity so boobies aplenty and I suppose there is quite a bit of blood in places, but it was one big yawnfest for me from start to finish.

Everything about it annoyed me, from the dated and irritating voice-over at the start of the movie where our main man (anti-hero if you will) explains what he's thinking, whats been going on, where he's going.... to the idiotic echoey whispering scene that forces me to actually concentrate on this dross to work out what was being said (and I still missed half of it).

Ok, so there are boobs, there is blood, there are intestines being flung about, there are amputations, there's even a drill to the eye (at least I think it was the eye), but I think this movie may have doubled as extra sleeping pills for me this evening.

There is no point to it, no message, no storyline to speak of apart from what I've described.

Do yourself a favour... don't waste your time!

Who Can Kill a Child - Will's Review

This weeks movie opens with 8 minutes of disturbing real-life footage (concentration camps, victims of Korean and Vietnam wars ect. ) all captioned to remind us how badly children suffer during such things. Grim stuff.

Then we cut to a happy beach scene... Where a dead woman washes ashore - having apparently been stabbed repeatedly, including in her thighs.

This is clearly the feel-good family movie of the year!

Before long we meet out protagonists, holidaying English couple Tom and Evelyn, who have left their first 2 kids at home (the 3rd is still in Evelyn's belly) in order to visit a small island that Tom visited as a child. This island is so small it isn't on the map, yet our stars have decided to leave both the hiring of a boat, and indeed clarifying the exact location of the island, until they arrive at the nearest coastal town in mainland Spain.

You'd think that having gone to the effort of having them spend a day in said town, there would be some kind of payoff to relying on a stranger to point to the bit of the map that should contain the island; but, no, they get there just fine.

Upon arrival the town appears to be deserted but for a handful of children, and it isn't long before we find out why - the children seem to have taken a homicidal dislike to adults.

For some reason, long after Tom starts to realise what is going on, he continues to insist to his wife that the adults have probably just gone to a festival at the next town over, and that everything is fine; Unfathomably, even having seen a girl kill an old man, and then watching the local children use the body as a piƱata, he still has his pregnant wife stay the night!

Eventually, they realise that they really are going to have to leave, for reasons I cannot fathom it is only then that they become a target for the children.

The title if the movie is a question asked within the narrative... Apparently the reason the children have been so successful in their adultcide is because no-one can bring themselves to kill a child.

Luckily, Tom is a little more pragmatic than the natives, and has no problem offing the little fuckers once it becomes obvious that its then or him. Evelyn, in the other hand, had me screaming abuse at the screen on more than one occasion.

Sadly, there's also a supernatural element that the film REALLY didn't need - upon finding a small group of
'Normal' children, we see that the desire to kill adults can be passed on by making eye contact (which isn't even the silliest example of the 'infection' spreading in the movie).

At times, I was reminded of the Village / Children of the Damned movies, so it wasn't a shock to see that this movie has also been released as 'Island of the Damned'

I did enjoy the movie, particularly the rather dark ending (the dramatic ending, not the 'sting' which relies too much on the supernatural element) but it does have some fairly major faults; that said, the acting is solid enough, and I did have fun watching it, therefore I will give this one a 'Will Recommends' ... But only just.

Who Can Kill a Child - Lisa's Review

*** SPOILERS ***

I read the title of this weeks movie and right away got completely the wrong idea about what sort of movie this was going to be.  Since becoming a mum, I find any kind of child murder/torture pretty near impossible to watch, so I worried how I'd manage with this one.  However, it seems I was wrong about the plot line here.

The first 5-10 minutes of the movie were very, very difficult for me to watch, even moreso because it is real documentary footage of atrocities including World War 2, Vietnam and several famines.  This footage is horrid!  Not anything I haven't seen before and something we should never forget, but it's still difficult to watch none-the-less.  The footage concentrates on the effects on the children and gives the scarilly high number of deaths in these atrocities which can be attributed to being kids.  I've always found footage like this difficult, obviously because we know its real, but since becoming a mother, any kind of footage involving children is guaranteed to start me off.  Make it real and you have one depressed young lady on your hands.  The footage is interspersed throughout with an eerie soundtrack of children singing.  The tune will probably stay in my head for weeks to come (along with some of those images).  The point?  To get through to the viewer what children have been put through over the years down to us adults.  The biggest victim is always the children. Who's to say they won't have had enough of it being that way some day... and so to the premis of our movie.

The first 10 minutes and this footage seems to be the reason for the on and off of the DPP list.  It really isn't required to 'get' the movie, but it certainly adds strength to the premis.
When the documentary footage stops, we are transported to Spain where some sort of festival seems to be taking place.  There are pinatas and celebration everywhere, so much so that our stars and holidaying British couple (Tom & Evelyn) are unable to find an empty hotel to book into.  Cue the recommendation of a small island closeby which is nice and quiet, which is exactly what they're looking for as Evelyn is heavilly pregnant and in need of a quiet break.

When they get to the island it is clear there is something amiss.  It appears to be deserted.  It later transpires that the island is in fact inhabited by children.  There is the occasional adult, but that's at their own peril.  It seems that these kids seek to do away with the adults in the world.  If this is due to atrocities children have had to tolerate for years at the hands of adults, I'm not sure, but that's the way we're supposed to look at it.

I won't go into minute detail about what happens as this is actually a really decent movie and one which I heartilly recommend anyone reading this watch.  Needless to say there are deaths.  The evil nature of the children is quite shocking.   They enjoy playing with their own human pinata a bit too much for my liking.

What it comes down to quite simply is.. to save yourself, could you kill a child?  In this instance, given what evil little b*stards they are, most definately!

One aspect of the movie which I didn't like is the fact that there is a supernatural element which really was not needed.  It seemed if the children make eye contact with a normal child, they are able to 'change them' to be the same way.   I suppose they needed some way to make the baby inside Evelyn evil enough to attack her from inside.  A bit of attention and belly rubbing from one of the island girls was enough to manage that.

I won't give away the ending or say any more about anything that happens, but this was really easy to watch, had a nice tension throughout, didn't drag and had solid performances from all involved.  There were some inconsistencies and oversights which can be forgiven, but all in all, I enjoyed this one.

Gets a recommended from me.
